Troop 72 went backpacking in the Indian Peaks Wilderness in August 2023. It was a 3 day and 2 night trip filled with action. The troop split up into two groups for the backpacking portion, one group going halfway up and the other group going the whole 7 miles up to Crater Lake to camp for the first night. The first day of hiking was a lot of incline and the backpacks being the heaviest on the beginning of the trip made it a tough day of hiking. Because the Indian Peaks area is bear country, the scouts had to keep all their food and smellables high in trees while they weren't actively using them to keep from any bears or other animals from eating them. The second day included sleeping in and day trips to other nearby lakes. Moose, lots of wildflowers and waterfalls were spotted. The last day consisted of hiking down to the trailhead. With lighter packs and almost completely downhill trail, this hike was a lot faster than the first day. Overall, this backpacking trip was an amazing experience and the troop will definitely be returning in the future.
